In The Awful Truth, the married couple at the center of the story is Jerry and Lucy Warriner, played by Cary Grant and Irene Dunne respectively. At the beginning of the film, their suspicions of infidelity lead them to separate and eventually file for divorce. While they claim to be divorcing due to Jerry's supposed infidelity, neither of them has concrete evidence.

As the divorce proceedings progress, a series of comedic misunderstandings and miscommunications arise. Both Jerry and Lucy, still pining for each other, engage in a variety of attempts to undermine each other's attempts at finding new romantic partners.

Lucy starts dating her wealthy and attractive Oklahoman oilman neighbor, Dan Leeson (played by Ralph Bellamy). She hopes that by parading this new relationship in front of Jerry, he will become jealous and realize his love for her. Meanwhile, Jerry fabricates a fling with a seductive singer, Dixie Belle (played by Joyce Compton), in an effort to make Lucy believe he has moved on.

Throughout the film, Jerry and Lucy's schemes to make each other jealous end up causing hilarious misunderstandings, leading to comedic situations. However, deep down, it becomes evident that they truly still love and care for each other.

As the divorce proceedings near their final stages, both Jerry and Lucy realize the error of their ways and the strength of their love. They come together to prevent the divorce from becoming final. In an emotional climax, they declare their love for each other, leading to a heartwarming reconciliation. The movie ends on a hopeful note as they decide to give their marriage another chance, having learned from their mistakes and misplaced suspicions.
