The story begins with young Forrest struggling to fit in due to his low IQ and braces on his legs, which he wears due to a physical disability. Despite his challenges, his loving mother, Mrs. Gump, instills in him a sense of optimism and teaches him valuable life lessons, such as "Life is like a box of chocolates, you never know what you're gonna get."
Forrest's life takes a significant turn when he unknowingly becomes a talented football player, leading to a scholarship at the University of Alabama, where he becomes a national star. Later, Forrest enlists in the army and is sent to Vietnam, where he befriends fellow soldier Lieutenant Dan Taylor, and saves many lives during combat.
After his service, Forrest becomes a successful ping pong player, participates in anti-war rallies, and eventually starts his own shrimp boat business, named "Bubba Gump Shrimp Co.", in honor of his friend Bubba Blue, who died in Vietnam. His business becomes enormously successful, and Forrest becomes a millionaire.
Throughout these achievements, Forrest remains fixated on his love for Jenny, who has had a troubled life despite being his childhood friend. Jenny leads a tumultuous existence, involved in counterculture movements, experimenting with drugs, and struggling to find her place in the world. Despite their occasional reunions and moments of affection, Jenny and Forrest repeatedly drift apart due to her personal demons.
As the years go by, Forrest's love for Jenny remains steadfast, and he eventually reconnects with her. Their relationship deepens when Jenny reveals that Forrest is the father of her son, Forrest Jr. They eventually marry, and their blissful life together is short-lived as Jenny falls critically ill.
Tragically, Jenny succumbs to an unknown illness, leaving Forrest devastated. He dedicates his life to raising their son as a single father, embodying the love and care he learned from his mother.
