In "What About Bob?", Dr. Leo Marvin is a highly successful psychiatrist who has just published a bestselling book called "Baby Steps." Leo is looking forward to his family vacation at their lakeside country house, where he plans to unwind and enjoy quality time with his wife, three children, and his sister Lily.

However, Leo's vacation plans are disrupted when his receptionist, Fay, introduces him to his new patient, Bob Wiley. Bob is a charming but extremely neurotic and dependent person who suffers from a multitude of phobias and anxiety disorders. Despite Leo's attempts to brush him off, Bob insists on receiving proper treatment and is determined to conquer his fears.

Feeling obligated to help Bob, Leo gives him a copy of his new book, hoping it will provide some guidance and stability. But Bob becomes instantly attached to Leo, idolizing him and seeking his constant advice and support. Bob goes to extreme lengths to be near Leo, even following him to his family's country house without an invitation.

At the country house, Bob quickly becomes a favorite among Leo's family members, particularly his wife, Fay, and his children, Anna and Sigmund. Bob's childlike enthusiasm and unfiltered honesty win everyone over, causing Leo to grow increasingly frustrated and jealous.

As Bob continues to disrupt Leo's vacation, Leo becomes more desperate to rid himself of this unwanted attachment. He tries various techniques to make Bob leave, including recommending other therapists and even fabricating a plan to test Bob's progress. However, Bob always manages to overcome his fears, much to Leo's dismay.

Leo's frustration and mounting stress begin to take a toll on his sanity, leading to a gradual breakdown. Meanwhile, Bob thrives in his newfound environment, slowly taking on more responsibilities and becoming an integral part of the family. This pushes Leo to the brink of madness, as he becomes convinced that Bob is intentionally sabotaging his life and reputation.

The climax of the film occurs during a local sailing race, where Leo's mental instability reaches its peak. Bob, on the other hand, shows incredible bravery and skill, rescuing Leo's daughter and winning the admiration of everyone present. Leo finally snaps and attempts to strangle Bob, but is stopped just in time by his wife and sister.

In the end, Leo is taken away by the police, as his family and Bob watch from a distance. Bob's progress and newfound independence are evident, as he confidently addresses a large crowd, lecturing them about baby steps and the importance of facing fears. The film concludes with Bob triumphantly sailing away, leaving Leo to face the consequences of his own actions.
