In "We're No Angels," the two escaped convicts are Ned and Jim, who have been imprisoned on Devil's Island in French Guiana. They manage to escape from the island and make their way to the small town of Cayenne, where they find shelter in a local store.

Ned and Jim discover that the store is owned by a kind-hearted family, consisting of a single mother, Isabelle, and her daughter, Amelie. The family is struggling to keep the store open, and Ned and Jim, wanting to help, decide to pose as priests to gain the trust of the townspeople and ultimately steal money to save the family's business.

As they portray themselves as priests, Ned and Jim interact with various members of the community, including a corrupt police officer, Captain Prial, and a wealthy man, Andre Trochu, who has a romantic interest in Isabelle. While pretending to be priests, the convicts learn about the town's financial problems and the dishonesty of its residents.

As Ned and Jim continue their charade, they find themselves growing fond of Isabelle, Amelie, and the other townspeople, which leads them to question their initial motivations. They start genuinely caring about the family's welfare and decide to help them without resorting to theft.

In their attempt to help, Ned and Jim orchestrate a series of unfortunate events that expose Captain Prial's corruption, bring justice to the town, and save the family's business. They ultimately choose to sacrifice their own freedom to protect Isabelle, Amelie, and the integrity of the town.

In the end, the police blockade at the border with Canada becomes inconsequential, as Ned and Jim have developed a genuine bond with the people they intended to deceive. They choose to remain, accepting their fate, and continuing to help Isabelle, Amelie, and the townspeople find happiness and stability.
