Willard Stiles, a socially awkward and timid young man, finds solace in the company of rats he raises as pets in his rundown family home. Despite his introverted nature, Willard is an intelligent and sensitive individual who longs for acceptance and a sense of belonging.

At work, Willard faces constant ridicule and mistreatment from his co-workers and supervisors. Led by Frank Martin, his spiteful and manipulative boss, the employees mock Willard, humiliate him, and take advantage of his gentle nature. Frank also exploits the company founded by Willard's deceased father, gradually squeezing Willard out of his own family legacy.

Willard's only true friends are his two pet rats, Ben and Socrates. He develops a peculiar bond with them, treating them with kindness, love, and attention, finding solace and empathy in their companionship. The rats, particularly Ben, exhibit exceptional intelligence and loyalty toward Willard.

Devastation strikes when one of Willard's beloved rats, Socrates, is accidentally killed in the workplace. Feeling overwhelming grief, anger, and resentment, Willard starts to view his remaining rat, Ben, as a symbol of vengeance. Recognizing the unique abilities of his rat companions, Willard embarks on a mission to exact revenge on those who have tormented him, turning his loyal pets into ruthless killers.

Under Willard's guidance, Ben and a growing army of rats unleash terror upon Willard's tormentors, attacking them in their homes, offices, and even at Frank's luxurious mansion. As the deaths become increasingly gruesome and frequent, the events catch the attention of the local authorities, leading to a manhunt for Willard and his deadly rat army.

Meanwhile, a new co-worker named Cathryn befriends Willard and becomes intrigued by his unusual behavior. Cathryn's understanding and support touch Willard, who starts to question his vengeful actions and the escalating violence. Despite his connection with Cathryn, a part of Willard struggles to let go of his warped desires for retribution.

As the authorities close in, Willard is forced to confront the consequences of his actions. He faces a moment of truth, torn between his loyalty to his rats and his newfound connection with Cathryn. Willard must decide whether to continue down a path of destruction or embrace a chance at redemption.

In the final act, Willard confronts Frank and his deepest fears, ultimately sacrificing himself to protect Cathryn from the wrath of his rats. Ben, deeply affected by his owner's sacrifice, leads the remaining rats away, disappearing into the night.

Ultimately, Willard discovers that revenge will not bring him the acceptance and understanding he desires. In his final moments, he realizes the importance of genuine human connection and the destructive power of harboring hatred and seeking vengeance.
