Andy Dufresne, the protagonist of "The Shawshank Redemption," is wrongly accused and convicted of the murder of his wife and her lover. Upon his arrival at Shawshank State Penitentiary, Andy befriends Ellis Boyd "Red" Redding, an inmate who has been serving a long sentence. Red becomes Andy's mentor and closest friend throughout their time in prison.

Inside Shawshank, Andy initially struggles to adapt to the harsh realities of prison life. However, his background as a banker and his excellent accounting skills quickly catch the attention of the prison staff, particularly the corrupt warden, Samuel Norton. Recognizing Andy's value, Norton assigns him to manage the prison finances, enabling him to embezzle money and launder it outside the prison.

While carrying out his duties, Andy slowly gains the respect and admiration of his fellow inmates, thanks to his honesty, kindness, and unwavering hope for a better future. He engages in various activities to improve life within the prison, such as helping the prison library by securing books and educational materials.

As the years go by, Andy becomes more focused on proving his innocence. He sends numerous letters to the state government, seeking a retrial for his case, but they are all consistently ignored. During this time, Andy also becomes acquainted with a young inmate named Tommy Williams. Andy discovers that Tommy holds crucial information about the murders he was falsely accused of, as he met the real killer while in another prison.

However, before Tommy can testify to this information and potentially clear Andy's name, he is murdered by the order of the corrupt prison captain, Byron Hadley, following pressure from Warden Norton. Devastated by the loss of his last hope, Andy does not give up. He decides to take matters into his own hands and begins secretly tunneling his way out of Shawshank, using rock hammer he had acquired over the years.

Over a period of several years, Andy manages to dig a tunnel behind a movie poster in his cell. He hides his escape plan by redirecting attention towards his financial schemes, which continue unabated. With each passing day, the tunnel grows longer, and Andy becomes increasingly hopeful of finally escaping the confines of Shawshank.

Finally, one night, while a thunderstorm rages outside, Andy executes his plan. He crawls through the tunnel, escaping through a sewer pipe, and emerges free on the other side. As he leaves, he exposes Warden Norton's corruption by broadcasting evidence of his embezzlement to the entire prison staff and local media.

The following morning, Andy is nowhere to be found in Shawshank. His absence shocks the staff and prisoners alike, as they discover the full extent of his escape. Red, who has been paroled after serving several decades, eventually receives a letter from Andy, revealing his successful escape to Mexico and encouraging Red to find him there.

Taking Andy's advice to heart, Red decides to join him and rebuild their lives together. After completing his parole, Red journeys to Zihuatanejo, a small coastal town in Mexico, where he finally reunites with his friend and fellow former inmate, embracing the freedom Andy's relentless hope has achieved for them both.
