In the movie Angel Heart, set in the 1950s, Harry Angel (played by Mickey Rourke) is a down-on-his-luck private detective in New York City. He is approached by the enigmatic Louis Cyphre (played by Robert De Niro) who hires him to locate a missing person named Johnny Favorite.

As Harry delves into the case, he discovers that Johnny was once a popular singer who mysteriously vanished during World War II. Harry begins his investigation by tracing Johnny's past and interviewing people associated with him, but encounters various obstacles and dead ends.

Throughout his search, Harry experiences bizarre and nightmarish visions. He encounters strange symbols and occult rituals, which seem to suggest a supernatural presence underlying Johnny Favorite's disappearance. Harry's mental and emotional state becomes increasingly fragile as he is plagued by disturbing dreams and hallucinations.

As Harry continues his investigation, he discovers a connection between Johnny and a voodoo priestess named Epiphany Proudfoot (played by Lisa Bonet). Their connection leads Harry to a series of murders that begin to occur around him.

In his pursuit of the truth, Harry uncovers a dark secret about his own identity and his link to Johnny Favorite. He gradually comes to realize that he himself may be Johnny, suffering from amnesia as a result of a deal he made with a devilish figure.

The movie gradually builds tension as Harry struggles to reconcile his own reality with the horrifying truth. As his journey takes him deeper into the supernatural and his own soul, the line between reality and fantasy blurs, and the film ends with a shocking revelation that leaves Harry forever changed.
