"The War of the Roses" is a dark comedy film released in 1989, directed by Danny DeVito, who also stars in the movie alongside Michael Douglas and Kathleen Turner. The film revolves around the disintegration of a once-happy marriage between Barbara and Oliver Rose, and their extreme attempts to force each other out of their luxurious home.

Barbara and Oliver Rose initially appear to be the perfect couple, living a lavish life, adjusting to the demands of their successful careers, and enjoying their beautiful house. However, Barbara starts to question her happiness and wonders what her life would be like without Oliver. When she realizes she likes the idea of independence, she begins to subtly distance herself emotionally from her husband.

At first, Oliver remains unaware of Barbara's discontent and continues to live his life as usual. However, as Barbara gradually reveals her desire to separate and claim the house for herself, Oliver becomes resentful and refuses to give up what he considers his property. Both parties insist on staying in the house, leading to an escalating battle of pranks, manipulation, and psychological warfare between the two spouses.

The situations become increasingly absurd and vicious, with Barbara and Oliver resorting to extreme measures to sabotage each other's lives. They engage in destructive acts such as destroying personal possessions, including valuable artworks, bulldozing rooms within the house, and even physically assaulting each other.

Caught in the crossfire is Gavin D'Amato, the couple's divorce attorney, who begins witnessing the extent to which Barbara and Oliver are willing to go in order to force the other out of their home. D'Amato initially tries to mediate between them but eventually finds himself influenced by their sheer determination and competitiveness.

As the war between Barbara and Oliver intensifies, causing immense emotional and physical damage, the story delves into the consequences of their relentless pursuit of victory. It explores the dark side of love and marriage, as well as the destructive power of material possessions.

Without giving away the ending, "The War of the Roses" delivers a provocative exploration of the breakdown of a relationship and the lengths individuals may go to when faced with losing what they believe is rightfully theirs. The film serves as a disturbing, yet darkly comedic cautionary tale about the destructive nature of obsession and pride.
