In the movie "The Couch Trip," the escaped delinquent John W. Burns, Jr., played by character actor Charles Grodin, seizes the opportunity to replace Dr. George Maitlin on a popular radio show where he poses as the renowned psychiatrist Lawrence Baird, portrayed by actor Dan Aykroyd. The film follows John's hilarious and mischievous journey as he navigates through the world of radio therapy and manages to captivate the audience with his unconventional and sometimes outrageous advice.

John's impersonation of Lawrence Baird quickly gains popularity, drawing in a large fan base of listeners who seek his counseling. Meanwhile, the real Dr. Baird is confined to a mental institution after a nervous breakdown. As John continues his charade, he finds himself entangled in a love triangle with two women: Laura Rollins (played by actress Donna Dixon), who works as a producer for the radio show, and the beautiful and ambitious reporter, Samantha Harper (played by actress Mary Gross).

As John gains more recognition, the station manager, Allen Green (played by character actor David Clennon), recognizes that "Dr. Baird" is unorthodox but highly entertaining. Sensing a boost in ratings, he promotes John's character even further, much to the chagrin of the legitimate, albeit mentally unstable, Dr. Maitlin (portrayed by actor Walter Matthau). Driven by a desire for revenge, Dr. Maitlin escapes from the institution and vows to expose John's charade.

While playing the role of Lawrence Baird, John becomes increasingly entwined in his own web of lies, encountering various hilarious predicaments and encounters with both patients and staff at the radio station. His unorthodox methods of therapy and outrageous behavior only add to his intrigue and fame, which continues to rise. However, with Dr. Maitlin closing in on John and threatening to reveal his true identity, John's facade becomes increasingly difficult to maintain.

The movie culminates in a climactic confrontation between John and Dr. Maitlin at a live broadcast event, where the truth behind John's impersonation is finally revealed. Despite the revelation, John's charisma and the personal connection he has forged with his listeners lead to a surprising twist, allowing him to make a positive impact on the lives of many individuals, albeit through unconventional means.

"The Couch Trip" is a comedy that explores themes of identity, fame, and the power of human connection. It showcases the comedic talents of Charles Grodin, Dan Aykroyd, and Walter Matthau, providing both laughs and heartwarming moments as John's journey unfolds.
