In L.A. Story, the "wacky weatherman" named Harris K. Telemacher (played by Steve Martin) works for a local Los Angeles TV station. Frustrated with his mundane life, he yearns for something more meaningful. Meanwhile, Sara McDowel (played by Victoria Tennant) is a British newspaper reporter assigned to cover the eccentricities of Los Angeles.

One day, Harris encounters a talking freeway billboard that mysteriously communicates with him, dispensing philosophical advice and guiding him towards self-discovery. Embracing the billboard's wisdom, Harris begins to question his career, relationships, and the state of his own happiness. As he follows the billboard's guidance, he starts to realize that he needs to find true love in order to find fulfillment.

In his quest for love, Harris becomes infatuated with Sara after they randomly meet at a restaurant, making him believe that she might be the one. However, Sara is in a complicated relationship with a pretentious British suitor named Roland (played by Richard E. Grant), who stifles her adventurous spirit. As Harris and Sara spend more time together, their connection deepens, and they find solace in each other's company.

To win Sara's heart, Harris orchestrates a series of wacky, offbeat dates and outings, showcasing the strange and unconventional aspects of Los Angeles. Together, they explore bizarre attractions like the La Brea Tar Pits, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, and an upscale restaurant where the customers are required to bring their own food. Their time together allows Sara to open up and experience the enchanting and extraordinary side of Los Angeles, finding beauty in its quirks.

Amidst all of this, Harris also faces personal growth and enlightenment. He digs deeper into his own desires, fears, and dreams, discovering what truly makes him happy. Along the way, he encounters various odd characters who challenge his beliefs and broaden his perspective, including a spiritual guru and a self-help street performer.

As their relationship blossoms, Harris and Sara navigate their own idiosyncrasies and reconcile with the unconventional aspects of their lives. Together, they learn to embrace love, spontaneity, and the magical unpredictability of life in early-90s Los Angeles.

L.A. Story is a romantic comedy that uses humor and whimsy to explore the search for meaning in a modern, fast-paced world, where the mundane and the extraordinary collide to create a unique and unforgettable journey of self-discovery and love.
