In the movie From Beyond, the main plot revolves around a group of scientists: Dr. Edward Pretorius (played by Ted Sorel), Dr. Crawford Tillinghast (played by Jeffrey Combs), and Dr. Katherine McMichaels (played by Barbara Crampton). They have created the Resonator, a machine designed to stimulate the pineal gland and allow users to perceive alternate dimensions and beings normally invisible to the human eye.

Once the scientists activate the Resonator, they begin to experience a horrifying reality filled with strange and grotesque creatures. Unfortunately, the phenomenal success of the experiment comes at a terrifying cost. Dr. Pretorius is attacked and killed by a bizarre creature from the alternate dimension, leaving only Dr. Tillinghast and Dr. McMichaels alive.

In the aftermath of the incident, Dr. Tillinghast is accused of murdering Dr. Pretorius and is institutionalized. Dr. McMichaels, convinced of Tillinghast's innocence and intrigued by the Resonator's capabilities, visits him in the institution. Together, they decide to recreate the experiment to prove Tillinghast's claims and vindicate him.

In their quest, Dr. McMichaels and Dr. Tillinghast enlist the help of a detective named Bubba Brownlee (played by Ken Foree) and a police officer named Sergeant Buford "Bubba" Brownlee (played by Ken Foree). They return to Dr. Pretorius's house and reactivate the Resonator, once again opening a portal to the alternate dimension.

As they explore the newfound reality, the group encounters increasingly terrifying and sadomasochistic creatures that feed on human brains and sensory experiences. The experiments lead to a series of dangerous and life-threatening encounters, involving both physical and psychological terrors.

As the psychological and physical boundaries between the dimensions blur, Dr. McMichaels and Bubba attempt to shut down the Resonator. Eventually, Dr. McMichaels destroys the machine, closing the portal and trapping the creatures back in their own dimension.

However, it becomes evident that the alternate dimension's influence has affected the scientists profoundly. Dr. Tillinghast is transformed into a monstrous, mutated creature and becomes uncontrollably violent. In the final confrontation, Dr. McMichaels manages to kill the mutated Tillinghast, but she too is transformed into a bizarre hybrid creature.

The movie concludes with Dr. McMichaels' transformation, leaving her in a state of uncertainty, perpetually oscillating between dimensions. The ambiguous ending suggests that the terror may not be entirely over and that the alternate dimension's influence may continue to haunt those involved.
