Betsy's Wedding is a romantic comedy film that revolves around Betsy Hopper, a quirky and offbeat fashion student, and her fiancé Dylan Walsh, an investment banker with a more conventional lifestyle. Both of them desire a small and intimate wedding reception, hoping to celebrate their love in a simple and meaningful way.

However, complications arise when Betsy's father, Eddie, a working-class construction contractor from Long Island, becomes overwhelmed by feelings of insecurity and competitiveness towards Jake's (Dylan's) wealthy and prestigious WASP (White Anglo-Saxon Protestant) parents. Eddie fears that his own humble background will be overshadowed by the wealth and social status of Jake's family.

Driven by his insecurities, Eddie decides to take matters into his own hands and transforms Betsy and Dylan's modest wedding reception into an extravagant, bank-breaking showpiece. This sudden change throws Betsy's mother, Lola, into a financial panic, as she realizes they may be in over their heads and unable to afford the extravagant event Eddie has planned.

As the wedding preparations get underway, chaos ensues. Betsy finds herself torn between her desire for a simple wedding and her father's intentions, placing strain on her relationship with both Eddie and Dylan. Meanwhile, Lola attempts to find a way to salvage their finances and prevent financial disaster.

Throughout the film, numerous comedic situations arise as the clash between Eddie's blue-collar mentality and Jake's upper-class lifestyle becomes more apparent. The different elements in the wedding planning, along with the involvement of eccentric family members and friends, add to the comic and chaotic atmosphere.

As the wedding day approaches, Betsy must decide whether to follow her father's extravagant vision or prioritize her own desires for a more intimate celebration. Ultimately, Betsy and Dylan's love for each other and their willingness to compromise and accept each other's differences prevail, bringing a heartwarming resolution to their wedding saga.
