Clark Kellogg, an aspiring filmmaker from a small town, arrives in New York City to pursue his dreams at film school. However, upon his arrival, he falls victim to a small-time thief who steals all of his belongings, including his money and identification. Penniless and desperate, Clark finds himself in a hopeless situation.

In his moment of distress, Clark crosses paths with Carmine "Jimmy the Toucan" Sabatini, a charismatic and eccentric mobster. There is an uncanny resemblance between Sabatini and the legendary cinematic godfather, Don Vito Corleone. Intrigued by Clark's film school aspirations, Sabatini proposes an unconventional and risky deal that Clark simply cannot refuse.

Sabatini, an "importer" with connections to the mafia, involves Clark in a highly unusual scheme. He asks Clark to deliver a mysterious package to a suspiciously fancy restaurant, known for its exquisite and exotic cuisine. Clark soon discovers that the package contains an endangered species, a Komodo dragon, effectively a living treasure.

As Clark becomes more entangled in Sabatini's world, he starts to question his own morality. He finds himself torn between his desire to succeed in film school and the moral implications of participating in this illegal activity. Clark's innocence clashes with the darker side of the criminal underbelly, forcing him to confront his own values and make difficult choices.

Throughout the film, Clark navigates a web of lies, deceit, and dangerous encounters. He forms an unlikely friendship with Sabatini's daughter, a rebellious woman who shares his aspirations for a different life. Together, they embark on a journey to protect the endangered creature and expose the illegal activities surrounding it.

As the film reaches its climax, Clark must find the courage to confront Sabatini and make a decisive choice that will define his future. In the midst of this caper involving rare animals and haute cuisine, The Freshman ultimately explores themes of loyalty, morality, and the struggle to find one's own identity in a world shaped by others.
