Anthony, a young man who recently experienced a nervous breakdown, is released from a mental hospital with no clear direction for his life. His childhood friend Dignan, who is known for being impulsive and unconventional, reunites with Anthony and convinces him to join him on a series of ill-conceived criminal activities.

Dignan introduces Anthony to Bob Mapplethorpe, a mutual friend and fellow misfit. The trio decides to form a gang and plan a crime spree, aiming to make a name for themselves. Dignan, however, has a peculiar fascination with his former boss, a supposedly legendary criminal named Mr. Henry.

Their first target is a bookstore, where they clumsily attempt to rob it but only manage to steal a small sum of money. Disappointed with their lack of success, they continue their journey, planning to seek shelter at a motel owned by Inez, Bob's sister.

Along the way, Anthony meets Inez and they form a mutual attraction. However, their budding romance is hindered by Anthony's involvement in Dignan's increasingly chaotic and irrational plans. Dignan, fueled by desperate ambition and a desire to impress Mr. Henry, leads the group to commit more petty crimes, which only further alienates Anthony from his newfound love interest.

Eventually, Dignan convinces Anthony and Bob to join him in a heist at a warehouse, which he believes will finally gain them recognition in the criminal underworld. However, their amateur skills and lack of planning result in a disastrous outcome, leaving them with no other option but to flee.

During their escape, Anthony and Bob decide to abandon Dignan's misguided ambitions and part ways with him, realizing that his reckless actions only lead to further trouble. Anthony finally confronts his own personal issues and begins to rebuild his life.

In the end, Anthony decides to leave behind his life of crime and pursue a more fulfilling path, while Dignan continues to chase his grandiose dreams. The film explores themes of friendship, redemption, and the pursuit of identity, as these characters navigate their way through their own personal failures and aspirations.
