"Story of Women" (original title: "Une affaire de femmes") is a French film directed by Claude Chabrol. It is based on the true story of Marie-Louise Giraud, a woman who was executed in 1943 for performing illegal abortions in Nazi-occupied France.

The film is set in occupied France during World War II. Marie Latour (played by Isabelle Huppert) lives with her husband Paul (played by François Cluzet) and their two children in a small apartment in a working-class neighborhood. Paul, a former soldier, has returned home after being wounded in combat and struggles to find work due to his injury.

Marie, feeling the weight of financial strain, starts offering illegal abortions to desperate women in her community. She learns the procedure from a doctor she meets in Paris and begins discreetly performing them in her apartment. Word spreads quickly, and soon Marie's services become sought after, as many women find themselves with unwanted pregnancies in the war-torn country.

As Marie's abortion business flourishes, she starts making a considerable income, which allows her to provide for her family better and buy necessities like food and clothing. However, her increasing wealth and growing indifference towards her husband cause tensions in their already strained relationship. Marie becomes emotionally distant from Paul, neglecting him both physically and emotionally.

While Marie successfully manages her business and gains independence, she starts to feel a sense of boredom and unfulfillment. Seeking excitement and personal satisfaction, she begins an affair with a young German soldier named Heinrich (played by Nils Tavernier). The affair offers her some escape from her monotonous life but also puts her in harm's way, as intimacy with the enemy carries significant risks in a country under occupation.

Eventually, Marie's clandestine activities catch up to her. The authorities discover her involvement in illegal abortions, and she is arrested, put on trial, and sentenced to death. The film ends with Marie in prison, waiting to be executed while reflecting on her choices and the consequences of her actions.

"Story of Women" explores themes of family dynamics, survival, female autonomy, and the moral complexities of wartime actions. It offers a nuanced portrayal of a woman navigating the difficult circumstances of wartime France and making choices driven by a mix of desperation, practicality, and personal desires.
