In the movie Burnt by the Sun, set in Russia in 1936, Colonel Kotov is a celebrated revolutionary hero enjoying a peaceful summer at his dacha (country house) with his wife Maroussia and their young daughter Nadia. They are joined by various friends and family members who add to the idyllic atmosphere.

However, the tranquility is shattered when a surprise guest arrives unannounced. Cousin Dmitri, who resides in Moscow, arrives at the dacha and immediately captivates everyone with his charm, charisma, and exceptional piano skills. He effortlessly wins over Maroussia and Nadia, who become infatuated with him.

Despite the joyous atmosphere, Kotov remains suspicious of Dmitri's motives. Being well aware of the intense repression of the Stalinist era, Kotov senses that Dmitri's visit is not purely social. He becomes increasingly convinced that his cousin has been sent to manipulate or spy on him.

As the story unfolds, tensions rise within the household. Kotov's paranoia grows, accompanied by instances of late-night phone calls and mysterious happenings. Furthermore, the dacha becomes a target of the secret police, who are investigating all suspected enemies of the state. Kotov's past revolutionary activities and associations make him a prime target.

Eventually, Kotov's suspicions are confirmed when it is revealed that Dmitri is, in fact, a high-ranking NKVD officer, sent to apprehend him. In a dramatic turn of events, the secret police arrive to arrest Kotov and take him away.

Maroussia, realizing the truth and being deeply in love with Kotov, makes a heartbreaking decision. She commits suicide, sacrificing herself to save her husband from the harsh fate that awaits him in the hands of the NKVD.

The film concludes with Kotov being taken away, shattered by the loss of his wife and the betrayal of his cousin. The idyllic summer at the dacha is forever tarnished by the tragic events that unfolded, illustrating the brutal nature of Stalin's regime and the far-reaching consequences it had on individuals and their families.
