In the movie "La Promesse," Igor, a 15-year-old boy, and his father Roger are involved in a housing and labor exploitation scheme in the outlying districts of Liege, Belgium. They deceive and swindle vulnerable individuals, taking advantage of their dire situations for personal gain.
One day, while working on one of their illegal operations, a terrible accident occurs, and a worker is seriously injured. The worker, realizing the severity of his injuries, pleads with Igor to promise that he will look after his wife and baby if anything should happen to him.
