As the story unfolds in the movie Swades, Mohan Bhargav, played by Shah Rukh Khan, is a successful NASA scientist living in the United States. He decides to return to India in order to bring his aging grandmother, Kaveriamma, played by Kishori Ballal, back with him to his home abroad.
Upon arriving in his native village Charanpur, Mohan is overwhelmed by the stark contrast between the advanced lifestyle he has in the US and the underdeveloped conditions in his village. He witnesses various social issues and challenges faced by the villagers, including lack of access to clean water, electricity, education, and inadequate healthcare facilities.
Mohan's interaction with Geeta, a school teacher played by Gayatri Joshi, gives him a deeper understanding of the problems faced by the villagers. Through their conversations, he begins to question the brain-drain occurring in India, where the educated and talented individuals are leaving their country for opportunities abroad.
Mohan decides to take a stand and use his knowledge and skills to uplift the living conditions of the villagers. He starts by initiating small changes like installing electricity, constructing a water tank, and introducing innovative farming techniques that help improve agricultural productivity. Gradually, more and more villagers begin to trust and follow him as he brings positive transformations to their lives.
Mohan's dedication and passion inspire the people of Charanpur to unite and work collectively towards development. They organize themselves into a cooperative and actively participate in improving their village by building roads, schools, and healthcare facilities. The film also explores the theme of democracy, as Mohan encourages the villagers to come together and exercise their voting rights during elections.
Throughout his journey, Mohan develops a deep sense of belonging and attachment to his roots. He recognizes the importance of contributing to the betterment of his own country and the lives of its people instead of seeking personal success abroad. His transformation and activism provide a powerful message about the potential for change when individuals take responsibility and work for the betterment of their communities.
Swades is a heartwarming and thought-provoking film that not only portrays the passion and commitment of one individual but also highlights the power of collective action in bringing about societal change.
