- After the partition of India, Umber Singh (played by Irrfan Khan) relocates to Punjab with his wife and three daughters, but desperately wants a son to carry on his lineage. When his fourth child is born, Umber insists on raising the child, Kanwar, as a boy, even going as far as giving her a male name and not revealing her true gender to the community.

- As Kanwar grows up, she embraces her identity as a boy and takes on masculine traits to fit in with her father's wishes. She is taught how to hunt and fight, and is treated as the son Umber always wanted. However, as Kanwar matures, she grapples with her true self and struggles with the pressure to conform to her father's expectations.

- Umber arranges for Kanwar to marry Neeli, a girl from a lower caste, as a way to ensure his son's future and maintain the family's honor. However, the marriage brings about further complications and internal conflict as Kanwar's true gender identity is revealed, and the family is forced to confront the consequences of hiding the truth.
