As the invasion progresses in San Francisco, Matthew Bennell, a health inspector, teams up with his colleague, Dr. David Kibner, to unravel the mysterious phenomenon. They start investigating the strange behavior of their friends and acquaintances who seem to have undergone a drastic change.

They soon discover that the alien invaders from a distant planet are capable of replicating humans while they sleep. These replicas are emotionless duplicates that replace the original person completely. Bennell and Kibner realize that a full-scale invasion is underway, and anyone could be an imposter.

Desperate to stay alive and protect their own humanity, Bennell and a small group of survivors, including Bennell's love interest, Elizabeth Driscoll, struggle to navigate the increasingly dangerous city. They encounter imposter after imposter, making it difficult to trust anyone.

As they try to find a way to escape from the city, they learn that the aliens are spreading rapidly and have already taken control of key positions in society, including influential people in politics and law enforcement. The survivors feel the walls closing in on them as they become increasingly isolated and hunted.

Bennell and his group encounter a mysterious writer, Jack Bellicec, and his wife Nancy, who have managed to avoid detection. They join forces and devise a plan to use their knowledge of the invasion to expose the aliens to the rest of the world.

In a heart-pounding climax, the group tries to stay one step ahead of the replicas, facing constant danger and uncertainty. They eventually reach the docks, hoping to escape on a ship before the invasion spreads beyond the city.

Just as they are about to board the ship, they realize that one of their own has been replaced. The tension builds as they confront the imposter within their midst. In a shocking twist, Jack Bellicec sacrifices himself to ensure the safety of the group, giving them a chance to escape.

Bennell, Driscoll, and the remaining survivors manage to leave San Francisco, haunted by the lingering fear that the invasion may have already spread to other cities. The movie ends with a sense of dread and uncertainty, leaving the audience to ponder the true extent of the invasion and its potential consequences for humanity.
