In Animal Kingdom, J, a 17-year-old teenager, is forced to move in with his estranged family after his mother's death. His grandmother, Smurf, takes him in and introduces him to her four criminal sons: Andrew "Pope," Craig, Darren, and Barry "Baz." J soon realizes that his new family is deeply involved in organized crime and has a tight-knit criminal empire.

As J becomes more entangled in their activities, he starts to witness the true extent of their ruthlessness and violence. Smurf, being a loving but manipulative matriarch, constantly tries to control J and mold him into a cunning and loyal member of the family. She also encourages her sons to use J's naivety to their advantage.

The family's criminal activities attract the attention of Detective Nathan Leckie, who is determined to take them down. Sensing the danger, Baz, the family's most level-headed member, plans to leave the criminal life and start fresh with his pregnant girlfriend, Catherine. However, Pope believes that Baz cannot simply walk away from their criminal enterprise.

Tensions rise within the family when Pope, troubled and unpredictable, murders two police officers in cold blood during a routine robbery. As a result, the Cody family becomes the target of an intense police manhunt. Fearing Pope's erratic behavior will bring their empire crashing down, the brothers contemplate turning him into the police. However, Smurf refuses to allow it, fiercely protecting Pope and saving him from his own destructive actions.

Meanwhile, J becomes romantically involved with Nicky, a young girl who introduces him to her drug-addicted mother. J's loyalty towards his family is tested when Nicky's mother overdoses, and he realizes that his family's criminal activities are directly responsible for her addiction.

As tensions reach a breaking point, J takes matters into his own hands. He manipulates the situation to simultaneously protect his family and ensure his own survival. In a shocking twist, J orchestrates a plan that leads to the downfall of Pope, effectively saving himself and the remaining Cody brothers from the grip of their criminal empire.

Animal Kingdom delves into the dark and dangerous world of crime, loyalty, and survival, exposing the blurred lines between family bonds and criminal activities. It showcases the lengths some individuals will go to protect their own, leaving audiences questioning the morals that dictate their actions.
