In the movie "Where the Lilies Bloom," the family of children consists of Mary Call Luther, Devola, Romey, and Ima Dean, who are left orphaned after the death of their father. Their mother had already passed away, leaving them no other family or means of support.

To avoid being separated and sent to foster homes, the self-reliant teenagers decide to keep their father's death a secret. They continue living in their remote Appalachian home, hidden from the prying eyes of the outside world. Mary Call, the eldest and responsible sister, takes charge of the family and becomes the main provider.

The children, who have a deep knowledge of the land and its resources, rely on their survival instincts and knowledge passed down by their father to sustain themselves. They hunt, fish, forage, and grow some crops to feed the family. Mary Call also finds odd jobs in neighboring towns to earn money for essential supplies and pay the property taxes to avoid eviction.

As the seasons pass, challenges arise, putting the family's secret at risk. Mary Call struggles to balance her duties at home, ensuring their safety, and managing the farm while also trying to support her siblings emotionally. Devola, the eldest son, is burdened by guilt over their father's death as he was there during the accident.

The outside world eventually starts peeking into the children's lives. The school principal, Roy Luther (their father's brother, though initially unaware of their situation), visits their secluded place multiple times, suspecting something is amiss. Mary Call must use her resourcefulness and intelligence to protect their secret while confronting her fears and uncertainties of the future.

Throughout the film, "Where the Lilies Bloom" emphasizes themes of family loyalty, resilience, and the struggle to maintain independence in the face of adversity. It explores the children's struggle to bridge the gap between the safety of their isolation and the potential dangers of being pulled into a system that may break the family apart.

As the story progresses, the family faces difficult decisions about when and how to reveal the truth about their father's death while grappling with the fear of losing each other. The movie focuses on the strength and determination of these resilient children, highlighting their unyielding spirit in the face of societal pressures.
