The Holy Mountain follows the story of the Thief (Horacio Salinas), a Christ-like figure who is chosen by the Alchemist to accompany him on a spiritual journey. Along the way, they encounter various disciples, each representing a different planet in the solar system, including the innocent Young Man (Juan Ferrara), the business tycoon who loves gold (Zamira Saunders), the war general (Sergio Kleiner), the artist (Richard Rutowski), and the police officer (Burt Kleiner).
The Alchemist guides them through a series of bizarre and surreal rituals, designed to strip them of their egos and attachments to material possessions. These rituals involve strange purification ceremonies, group sex, and the symbolic sacrifice of animals. Through these experiences, the disciples begin to question their identities and the nature of reality.
Eventually, the group reaches Lotus Island, a place where the rich and powerful live in indulgence and excess. They discover that the immortals who secretively rule the universe reside on the Sacred Mountain. The Alchemist and his disciples decide to climb the Holy Mountain to challenge and replace these gods.
As they ascend the mountain, they face various trials and obstacles that test their resolve and understanding. Along the way, they encounter surreal and symbolic scenarios, including an army of toads, a room filled with gold, and a library containing every book in the world.
In the end, the Thief reaches the top of the Holy Mountain alone, having shed all his attachments and achieved enlightenment. He confronts the immortals who rule the universe and discovers that they are just empty suits, mere illusions. The Thief then takes their place, becoming the new ruler of the universe. The movie ends with a surreal image of the Thief becoming a statue, suggesting a cyclical nature to existence and the possibility of infinite rebirth.
The Holy Mountain is known for its provocative and visually stunning imagery, exploring themes of spirituality, enlightenment, and the search for ultimate truth. It challenges societal norms, organized religion, and consumerism, aiming to provoke thought and self-reflection in its audience.
