"The Breadwinner" is an animated film based on the best-selling novel by Deborah Ellis. The story follows the life of Parvana, an eleven-year-old girl living in Kabul, Afghanistan during the Taliban's oppressive regime.

Parvana and her family are struggling to survive in a war-torn country where women are forbidden to work or leave the house without a male escort. After her father, a former teacher, is unjustly imprisoned by the Taliban, Parvana becomes the sole breadwinner for her family, which includes her mother, older sister, and younger brother.

Desperate to help her family, Parvana disguises herself as a boy, cutting her hair and wearing her deceased older brother's clothes. Under this new identity, she ventures out into the city, using her newfound freedom to buy food, collect water, and earn money by reading and writing letters for illiterate people in the market.

Parvana meets another girl, Shauzia, who is also disguised as a boy, and together they navigate the dangers and risks of living under the Taliban regime. Parvana encounters various challenges, including narrowly escaping arrest, witnessing violence, and encountering constant fear and uncertainty.

As Parvana continues to provide for her family, she discovers strength and resilience within herself. However, the weight of her disguise and the constant danger she faces begin to take a toll on her physical and mental well-being.

Throughout the film, there are also animated sequences that explore Parvana's imagination and her storytelling skills. These sequences depict a parallel story set in ancient Afghanistan, featuring a young hero named Sulayman who embarks on a quest to save his village from an evil elephant king.

In a gripping climax, Parvana's secrets are revealed when an encounter with a former coworker from her father's school puts her and her family in danger. Parvana's father manages to secure their safety by revealing his daughter's true identity, prompting the Taliban to release him.

"The Breadwinner" ultimately explores themes of female empowerment, determination, and the power of storytelling. Despite the harsh realities of life under Taliban rule, Parvana's bravery and perseverance offer hope for a brighter future.
