In the movie Trees Lounge, directed by Steve Buscemi, Tommy Basilio (played by Buscemi himself) is a middle-aged man who is struggling with various personal and professional setbacks. After losing his job as an auto mechanic, he finds solace in spending his days and nights at the Trees Lounge, a local neighborhood bar where he knows the regulars well.

Tommy's love life is also in shambles. He recently broke up with his girlfriend Theresa (played by Elizabeth Bracco) due to his excessive drinking and his inability to commit to a stable relationship. Theresa's niece, Debbie (played by Chloë Sevigny), is a seventeen-year-old who often frequents the Trees Lounge as well. Tommy becomes infatuated with Debbie and starts getting romantically involved with her, despite the significant age difference.

However, Tommy's involvement with Debbie raises serious concerns and conflicts with her father, who strongly disapproves of their relationship. This ultimately leads to a confrontation between Tommy and Debbie's father, escalating the already troubled situation even further.

Amidst these personal troubles, Tommy manages to secure a job as an ice cream truck driver. Though it may seem like a mundane job, it allows him to interact with a diverse range of people, including children and their families. Through his interactions with these individuals, Tommy gains some insights into his own life and what truly matters.

Throughout the movie, the audience witnesses Tommy's struggles with addiction, loneliness, and trying to find a sense of purpose in his life. The narrative follows him as he navigates these challenges, making choices that sometimes worsen his situation. Trees Lounge delves into themes of self-destructive behavior, the search for human connection, and the consequences of our actions.
