In The Barefoot Executive, Steven Post (played by Kurt Russell) is a determined and ambitious young man working as a mailroom clerk at the struggling Century Broadcasting System, a second-rate TV network. Despite his dreams of success, Steven continually finds himself stuck in the mailroom and unable to make any progress towards his goal of reaching the boardroom.

However, everything changes when Steven discovers a unique talent possessed by his girlfriend Jennifer's lovable pet chimpanzee, Raffles. Raffles has an uncanny ability to predict which television shows will become successful hits. This incredible skill presents Steven with an opportunity to turn his career around.

With Raffles' help, Steven starts picking the perfect hit shows for the network, gaining him recognition and ultimately leading to his promotion as vice president. As he rises up the corporate ladder, jealous rivals within the company, including the top dog at the studio, become desperate to take advantage of Raffles' talent for their own benefit.
