In the movie "Paper Moon," it is set during the Great Depression in the 1930s. The con man named Moses Pray (played by Ryan O'Neal) attends the funeral of a woman he had a brief fling with. At the funeral, he encounters a young girl named Addie Loggins (played by Tatum O'Neal), who claims to be his illegitimate daughter.

Uncertain about their true relation, Moses agrees to take Addie with him on his journey as a small-time scammer and self-proclaimed Bible salesman. Initially, Moses sees this as an inconvenience and tries to leave Addie behind multiple times. However, as they spend more time together, Moses starts to develop a fondness for Addie.

The duo soon becomes partners in crime, running various scams across Kansas and Missouri. Addie, who is only nine years old, possesses a cunning wit and street smarts beyond her years. She quickly becomes an asset in their cons, helping Moses execute their schemes flawlessly.

Their adventures take them through various towns, and they encounter an array of colorful characters along the way. One notable encounter involves Trixie Delight (played by Madeline Kahn), a burlesque dancer whom Moses once had a relationship with. Trixie reluctantly agrees to help them after some persuasion.

As their bond strengthens, Moses and Addie form a heartwarming relationship that fills the void left by her deceased mother. Despite their shared escapades and unique dynamic, Moses continues to doubt Addie's paternity until the movie's climax.

However, the story takes an emotional turn when Moses and Addie cross paths with a criminal named Imogene (played by P.J. Johnson), who claims to be Addie's real mother. To determine the truth, Moses orchestrates a DNA test, which reveals that he is, indeed, Addie's biological father.

After this revelation, Moses fully embraces his role as Addie's father figure and partner, prioritizing her well-being over their scamming lifestyle. They decide to start afresh, leaving behind their dubious past and uncertain futures.

"Paper Moon" is ultimately a heartwarming tale of an unconventional family formed in the midst of desperation and uncertainty during one of America's darkest periods.
