In "To Die For," Suzanne Stone (played by Nicole Kidman) is a young and ambitious woman from a small town who dreams of becoming a world-famous news anchor. She is obsessed with achieving fame and fortune, and is willing to go to extreme lengths to make her dreams come true.

Suzanne starts by marrying Larry Maretto (played by Matt Dillon), a local restaurant manager. However, she quickly becomes bored with her seemingly mundane life and decides that Larry is holding her back from her true potential. Suzanne begins having an affair with Jimmy Emmett (played by Joaquin Phoenix), a high school student who dreams of becoming a rock star.

Suzanne realizes that her path to fame may be hindered by her marriage, so she concocts a plan to have Larry killed. She persuades Jimmy to carry out the murder, manipulating him by telling him that killing her husband is the only way they can be together. In a shocking twist, Suzanne's plan succeeds, and Larry is murdered.

The murder gains national media attention, and Suzanne sees this as her opportunity for stardom. She presents herself as a grieving widow and uses the media coverage to propel her career forward. She begins hosting her own local television show and becomes the subject of a documentary being made by two teenagers, Lydia and Russel (played by Alison Folland and Casey Affleck).

As Suzanne's fame grows, she becomes increasingly ruthless and willing to destroy anyone who may threaten her position. She manipulates Lydia and Russel, even using her influence to exploit their vulnerability for her own gain. Suzanne's true colors are revealed as she coldly disregards the lives of those around her.

Ultimately, Suzanne's calculated and manipulative actions catch up with her. The truth about her involvement in Larry's murder is exposed, and she is put on trial for her crimes. The once charming and determined woman is now exposed as a villainous mastermind, willing to sacrifice everything and anyone for her own ambitions.

"To Die For" explores themes of obsession, ambition, and the dark side of the human psyche. It delves into the lengths some individuals will go to in order to achieve fame and highlights the dire consequences that ensue when morality and humanity are sacrificed in pursuit of one's goals.
