In the movie Goin' South, Henry Moon is a notorious outlaw who is captured by a posse after attempting to escape to Mexico on his horse. When his horse abandons him and he is captured, Henry learns about a post-Civil War law in the small town he is taken to.

According to this law, any single or widowed woman can save a man from the gallows by marrying him. At first skeptical, Henry realizes that this might be his only chance at avoiding the hangman's noose. Desperate to escape death, he agrees to marry a woman named Julia Tate, played by Mary Steenburgen.

Julia is a strong-willed woman who runs a struggling farm. Initially, she agrees to marry Henry purely out of a desire to save his life, expecting him to leave once the threat is gone. However, as time goes by, Henry's presence begins to transform Julia's life and the dynamics of her community.

Julia's friends, neighbors, and even her slaves are initially wary of Henry, but they soon begin to see his positive influence. Henry helps Julia turn her farm into a profitable enterprise by implementing his knowledge of mining, which he acquired during his criminal years. He also helps the townsfolk form a cooperative by teaching them techniques for working together and maximizing their resources.

As Henry and Julia spend more time together, the inevitable happens: they fall in love. Their relationship blossoms, and they start supporting each other not only in business but also emotionally. However, their newfound happiness is threatened when Henry's criminal past catches up with him.

A dangerous gang from Henry's past arrives in town, seeking revenge and jeopardizing the life he has built with Julia. In an intense and action-packed climax, Henry must confront his former associates to protect his future with Julia and the community that has come to accept him.

In the end, Henry successfully defends himself and those he cares about, proving that he has truly changed his ways. Henry and Julia are finally free to continue their life together, having overcome the obstacles that once stood in their path.

Goin' South is a charming and comedic Western that explores themes of redemption, love, and the power of second chances.
