In the classic Ealing comedy "The Magnet," the story revolves around a mischievous and imaginative young boy named Johnny Brent (played by James Fox). One day, Johnny inexplicably finds himself in possession of a powerful magnet, which he gleefully discovers can attract and manipulate metal objects.

Fascinated by his newfound power, Johnny starts testing the magnetic abilities in various mischievous and playful ways. He collects various objects and even manages to accidentally disrupt a film screening at a local cinema by attracting all the metal objects in the room.

However, things take a more serious turn when Johnny accidentally attracts a valuable antique medal belonging to a notorious local gangster, Sam Gervasi (played by Stephen Murray). As Johnny's reputation for possessing a magic magnet spreads among the neighborhood kids, Sam and his henchmen believe there's something special about the magnet that they want for themselves.

Amidst the chaos, Johnny becomes a local hero when he inadvertently saves a child's life by using the magnet to retrieve a toy from a dangerous height. This incident catches the attention of the media and the public, turning Johnny into a beloved figure.

As the story unfolds, Johnny's father, played by Kay Walsh, becomes increasingly concerned about his son's obsession with the magnet and the dangerous situations it attracts. He attempts to confiscate it, leading Johnny to run away to avoid losing his newfound hero status and the magnet itself.

While on the run, Johnny teams up with Liz (played by Kathleen Harrison), an eccentric woman who believes in his "magic magnet" and helps him evade both Sam Gervasi and his worried father. The unlikely duo embarks on a series of misadventures around town, managing to outsmart the gangster and his henchmen at every turn.

Ultimately, Johnny realizes that he shouldn't rely solely on the magnet's power and understands the importance of being honest with his father. In a heartwarming conclusion, Johnny returns home, and with the support and love of his family, realizes that true heroism comes from within.

"The Magnet" is a delightful and lighthearted film exploring the innocence, imagination, and mischief of childhood, all intertwined with themes of heroism, family, and the value of truth.
