"The Great White Hype" is a satirical sports comedy film released in 1996. The story revolves around a charismatic boxing champion named James "The Grim Reaper" Roper, who has become invincible in the ring, winning every match with ease. However, his promoter, Reverend Fred Sultan, notices a decline in the viewership and decides that something new and exciting is needed to rejuvenate the sport and boost its marketability.

In a desperate attempt to revive public interest, Sultan discovers that the only man to ever defeat Roper is a retired boxer named Terry Conklin. Surprisingly, Conklin is now living a peaceful life working as a nightclub owner. To Sultan's dismay, Conklin happens to be white, making it a challenging sell to the audience to believe in the "Great White Hope" narrative.

Despite initial resistance, Sultan successfully convinces Conklin to come out of retirement and face Roper once again. As Conklin agrees to the fight, he begins an intense training regimen to prepare for the highly anticipated match. On the other hand, Roper's overconfidence causes him to neglect his training, and he indulges in a lavish and carefree lifestyle, eventually falling out of shape.

As the date of the fight approaches, the media, fans, and general public quickly become swept up in the hype surrounding the bout. Sultan's promotional tactics cleverly exploit racial dynamics, as the contest is marketed as a classic white vs. black showdown, making it an electrifying event.

Throughout the film, the story explores themes of race, manipulation, and the fickleness of the media and public opinion. Additionally, it satirizes the world of professional sports and the questionable ethics within it, mocking the often exploitative relationships between promoters, athletes, and the spectators.

When the day of the fight finally arrives, the contrast between Roper's lack of preparation and Conklin's dedication becomes evident. As the underdog, Conklin surprises both the audience and Roper with his skill and resilience, posing a genuine threat to the champion.

The climax of the film culminates in a thrilling and unpredictable boxing match, where both fighters display their strengths and weaknesses. The story takes unexpected turns, challenging the traditional narrative structure of these types of sports films.

Without giving away the ending, "The Great White Hype" delivers a comedic and thought-provoking conclusion, playing with the expectations of the audience and subverting the typical sports film tropes.
