Ruben Guthrie is a 2015 Australian film directed by Brendan Cowell, based on his own play of the same name. The movie follows the story of Ruben Guthrie, a successful and hard-partying Sydney-based advertising executive, who seems to have it all - wealth, fame, and a beautiful model fiancée named Zoya.

However, Ruben's excessive alcohol consumption begins to take a toll on his life. One night, after a particularly wild and reckless party, Ruben reaches a breaking point. He experiences a near-fatal accident, where he falls from a balcony while under the influence of alcohol. This incident becomes a turning point in his life and prompts him to reassess his destructive lifestyle.

Following the accident, Ruben decides to give up drinking and starts his journey to sobriety. However, this decision is met with mixed reactions from his friends, colleagues, and even his fiancée. Some view it as a sign of strength and self-improvement, while others see it as a threat to their own hedonistic lifestyles.

As Ruben navigates through his newfound sobriety, he faces various challenges. He attends AA meetings, seeks guidance from a therapist, and tries to reconnect with his estranged family. Through his struggles, he starts discovering more about himself and the importance of personal growth, finding love, and pursuing true happiness.

Ruben also develops a budding relationship with Virginia, a free-spirited woman who introduces him to alternative, healthy activities that replace his former partying ways. Together, they embark on adventures that include early morning ocean swims and mountain hikes, which provide Ruben with a newfound sense of fulfillment and purpose.

However, Ruben's journey is not without obstacles. He faces temptations and relapses, and must confront the consequences of his past actions. Moreover, he must decide whether to reconcile with Zoya, who is unwilling to support his path to sobriety.

Ruben Guthrie is a poignant and often humorous exploration of addiction, redemption, and personal growth. The film highlights the struggle of an individual caught between a society that glamorizes excess and the desire to change and lead a healthier, more balanced life.
