Stromboli is an Italian neorealist film directed by Roberto Rossellini and released in 1950. The story revolves around Karin (played by Ingrid Bergman), a Lithuanian woman who marries an Italian fisherman named Antonio (played by Mario Vitale) in a desperate attempt to escape her war-torn homeland.

However, life on the small volcanic island of Stromboli proves to be harsh and isolating for Karin. The village community is unwelcoming and she struggles to adapt to the challenging living conditions. Antonio, though well-intentioned, struggles to understand Karin's emotional turmoil.

Haunted by memories of her broken marriage and a fight with her daughter back in Lithuania, Karin increasingly feels trapped and desperate on the island. When she discovers that she is pregnant, her sense of isolation intensifies.

Desperate to find a solution, Karin encounters a local woman who tells her about a self-help retreat for troubled individuals. Sensing this as an opportunity to escape her situation and seek guidance, Karin decides to join the intense self-help program. The retreat involves a demanding physical and spiritual journey up the volcano, mirroring the emotional challenges Karin faces.

As Karin embarks on this arduous journey, her fellow participants push her to confront her fears, doubts, and traumas. Through this process, she gains a deeper understanding of herself and begins to find the inner strength to face her past and make peace with her present situation.

Stromboli explores themes of alienation, personal growth, and the search for meaning. It delves into Karin's internal struggles, showcasing her transformation and resilience as she confronts her haunted past and seeks a way to move forward.
