"They Might Be Giants" is a 1971 American mystery comedy film directed by Anthony Harvey. The movie follows Justin Playfair (played by George C. Scott), a wealthy retired judge who firmly believes he is Sherlock Holmes. However, his obsession with Sherlock's arch-nemesis, Moriarty, has landed him in a psychiatric institution as a delusional patient.

The story begins when Dr. Mildred Watson (played by Joanne Woodward), a compassionate psychiatrist, takes an interest in Justin's case. She becomes convinced that he is not truly insane but rather suffering from a prolonged grief-induced delusion following the loss of his wife. Dr. Watson decides to treat him personally and, as a female psychiatrist, takes up the name of the famous fictional character to establish a connection with Justin.

Driven by her curiosity, Dr. Watson sets out on a psychological adventure with Justin, starting their own investigation into the disappearance of Moriarty. They adopt a series of disguises, travel around 1970s New York City and engage in a series of whimsical and comical situations. Along the way, they meet eccentric characters resembling familiar characters from Arthur Conan Doyle's stories.

As their search progresses, Justin's brilliant deductive skills and Dr. Watson's understanding of his condition combine to unravel a deeper mystery. Their quest becomes not only about finding Moriarty but also about Justin's journey towards healing and understanding his own past.

"They Might Be Giants" explores themes of loss, sanity, and the power of imagination in the face of adversity. It weaves together elements of comedy, romance, and mystery while offering a unique take on the beloved character of Sherlock Holmes. Ultimately, the movie leaves the audience to question the fine line between reality and the imagination and whether a supposed "madman" can possess an extraordinary genius.
