In the movie Peacock, the story revolves around John Skillpa (played by Cillian Murphy), a quiet and introverted man living in a small town in Nebraska during the 1950s. Unbeknownst to the townspeople, John has a dissociative identity disorder, also known as multiple personality disorder, which manifests through two distinct alter egos – Emma, a submissive and delicate woman, and Jack, a charismatic and confident man.

To maintain his secret, John goes to extreme lengths, creating an illusion that both Emma and Jack are a married couple. He lives a secluded life, only stepping out as one persona at a time while the other remains hidden in their shared home. The townspeople, believing they are separate individuals, are none the wiser.

However, everything changes when a train derails near John's property, causing his meticulously crafted facade to crumble. Emma is accidentally revealed to the townspeople, leading to confusion and shock. Among those affected is a struggling young mother named Maggie (played by Ellen Page).

Maggie, who has her own difficult past, is intrigued by the enigma that is John Skillpa. She becomes determined to uncover the truth behind his split personalities and the reason for his elaborate charade. As she digs deeper, she uncovers a dark secret from John's past, which becomes the key to understanding his condition.

As Maggie threatens to expose the truth, tensions rise between John's alter egos. Emma desperately pleads for everything to remain as it is, while Jack, who sees this as a chance to be free, becomes increasingly hostile. A battle ensues within John's mind as the two personalities vie for control.

Caught in the middle is Maggie, torn between her quest for truth and her growing affection for John. She must decide whether to help this complex man face his past and ultimately find healing or to reveal the truth, potentially shattering the fragile existence he has created.

Peacock explores themes of identity, secrecy, and the power of the mind, diving into the complexities of human nature and the lengths we go to protect ourselves from our pasts.
