In the movie Fail-Safe, the story revolves around a grave mistake made by an American bomber team due to a technical defect. The team, flying a nuclear-armed bomber, receives a routine transmission that Moscow has been attacked with nuclear weapons. However, this transmission is a result of a mechanical error, and Moscow is, in fact, intact.

As soon as they receive this false information, the bomber team is ordered to proceed with their mission to retaliate and launch an attack on the Soviet Union. Since their orders are based on the assumption of a real attack, the President of the United States, portrayed by actor Henry Fonda, is informed about the impending atomic catastrophe.

The President swiftly tries to establish communication with the Soviet Union to inform them about the mistake and halt the American bomber. He engages in tense negotiations with the Soviet Premier, trying to convince them that the situation was an accident. The President assures the Soviet Premier that he will do whatever it takes to prevent the bomber from reaching its target and triggering a full-scale nuclear war.

To further complicate matters, the American pilot of the bomber, Colonel Jack Grady (played by Edward Binns), realizes that something is amiss upon observing that there are no signs of the expected nuclear devastation in Moscow. Colonel Grady, though unable to communicate directly with the President or anyone else, decides to disobey orders and divert the bomber away from its target.

Meanwhile, the President explores all possible options to stop the bomber, including ordering defensive measures such as deploying fighter jets and interceptors to shoot down the rogue plane. He faces enormous pressure and must make crucial decisions while desperately trying to avert a catastrophe.

In a race against time, the President's determination and the pilot's courage become the key factors in preventing the accidental destruction of Moscow and averting an all-out nuclear war between the United States and the Soviet Union.

Fail-Safe is a tense and thought-provoking Cold War thriller that explores the dangers of human error and the potential consequences of technology in the context of nuclear warfare.
