After escaping from prison, Edmond Dantés, now known as the Count of Monte Cristo, retrieves a hidden treasure on the island of Monte Cristo. With his newfound wealth, he adopts various disguises and aliases to gradually exact revenge on those who betrayed him.

His first target is Fernand Mondego, now known as the Count de Morcerf, who married Mercedes after betraying Edmond. The Count exposes Fernand's past as a traitor and forces him to reveal his true identity to Mercedes, leading to their separation.

The Count then targets Baron Danglars, who had betrayed Edmond by framing him as a Bonapartist conspirator. The Count uses his influence to ruin Danglars financially, bringing about his downfall.

Next, the Count focuses on Gérard de Villefort, a prosecutor who had unjustly sentenced Edmond to prison. The Count reveals Villefort's dark secrets, including his illegitimate child and his role in Edmond's imprisonment. Villefort's reputation is destroyed, and he descends into madness.

During his revenge, the Count befriends Albert de Morcerf, Fernand and Mercedes' son, without revealing his true identity. However, the Count's plans are intricately interwoven and eventually put Albert's life at stake. Mercedes learns about the Count's true identity and pleads for her son's life.

In a dramatic climax, the Count reveals his true intentions to Albert and Mercedes, explaining that his ultimate goal was to make them suffer the way he did. However, upon witnessing Mercedes' genuine remorse and love for him, the Count realizes the futility of revenge and forgives his enemies.

The Count ultimately renounces his plans for vengeance and withdraws to live in seclusion, seeking happiness with Haydée, a woman he had rescued from slavery and who had grown to love him. In the end, the story explores themes of redemption, forgiveness, and the consequences of revenge.
