Mortal Thoughts is a psychological thriller film released in 1991, directed by Alan Rudolph. The story mainly revolves around Joyce Urbanksi (played by Demi Moore) and her close friend Cynthia Kellogg (played by Glenne Headly), as they find themselves entangled in a murder investigation.

Joyce and Cynthia work together at a beauty salon, and they both share a deep bond. However, their lives take a dark turn when they become embroiled in the violent world of Joyce's abusive and manipulative husband, James Urbanksi (played by Bruce Willis). James is an alcoholic and serial abuser who regularly steals from Joyce and terrorizes her both emotionally and physically.

One day, during a group outing with friends, James meets a gruesome end when someone cuts his throat, causing him to bleed to death. The police launch an investigation into his murder, but due to his despicable behavior and the numerous enemies he has made, it becomes difficult to pinpoint the killer. The film then follows Joyce and Cynthia as they are questioned by detectives and forced to confront their own secrets and hidden desires.

As the story unfolds, it becomes clear that both Joyce and Cynthia have reasons to resent James and may have had motives to eliminate him. Joyce, desperate to escape her abusive marriage, had confided in Cynthia about her worries that she might be James' next victim. Cynthia, on the other hand, had developed an unhealthy infatuation with James, leading to a complicated love triangle between her, Joyce, and James.

As the investigation progresses, the audience is taken on a journey through the characters' twisted relationships, deceitful revelations, and manipulations. Dark secrets and unexpected betrayals come to light, blurring the lines between guilt and innocence. The film keeps viewers guessing as to who could be responsible for James' murder until the climactic final acts.

Mortal Thoughts explores themes of domestic abuse, obsession, betrayal, and the lengths people will go to protect themselves. With its complex plot and intense performances by the cast, the movie delves into the darkness of human nature and the consequences of one's actions.
