The movie "The Return of Martin Guerre" is based on a true story and revolves around a man named Martin Guerre who mysteriously returns to the village of Artigat in France during the 16th century after being absent for several years due to war.

Upon his return, Martin's long-lost wife, Bertrande de Rols, and his family are initially skeptical about his identity. However, the new Martin seems to know intricate details about his family, childhood memories, and even intimate moments shared with Bertrande. This gradually convinces many villagers, including Martin's father and friends, that he is indeed the real Martin Guerre.

Martin and Bertrande resume their marital relationship, and the village accepts him as the rightful heir to a family inheritance. However, doubts eventually resurface when strange behavior and inconsistencies in the new Martin's actions and personality arise. Bertrande becomes increasingly suspicious and begins to question whether this man is truly her husband.

In the meantime, the local magistrate becomes involved in the investigation and sets out to uncover the truth. Several witnesses are called, and conflicting testimonies emerge. The case ultimately turns into a trial, with the real Martin Guerre's absence during childhood and young adulthood becoming a significant obstacle in proving his true identity.

As the trial progresses, Bertrande becomes more confused and conflicted. She starts to doubt her own memories and emotions while grappling with her uncertainty about her husband's identity. The film navigates themes of love, betrayal, and the nature of personal identity.

In a surprising turn of events, a former childhood friend of Martin Guerre arrives in the village and exposes the imposter's true identity. The man impersonating Martin is revealed to be an impostor named Arnaud du Tilh, also known as "Pansette," who had learned about the real Martin Guerre during his time in the war.

Arnaud had successfully deceived the villagers with his extensive knowledge and intimate details about Martin's life, charming them into believing he was the real Martin. However, his true identity is exposed, and the villagers turn against him.

The movie concludes with Arnaud being put on trial for his impersonation and deceit, ultimately leading to his execution. Bertrande is left questioning her own actions and emotions, torn between her lingering feelings for the impostor and her loyalty to her true husband, who still remains absent.

"The Return of Martin Guerre" explores themes of identity, perception, and the complex nature of trust and love in a medieval setting.
