In the movie Thin Ice, the dishonest insurance salesman, Mickey Prohaska, finds himself in financial trouble during a cold Wisconsin winter. Desperate to improve his situation, he hatches a plan to steal a valuable and rare violin, which is owned by a reclusive farmer named Gorvy Hauer.

Mickey enlists the help of a psychopath named Randy who claims to have inside knowledge of the violin's whereabouts. However, as the plan unfolds, it becomes increasingly clear that Randy is unpredictable and volatile, posing a significant threat to Mickey's well-being.

As they try to execute the heist, Mickey realizes that his life is rapidly spiraling out of control. He must navigate a web of deceit, danger, and unforeseen circumstances, all while dealing with the frigid and unforgiving Wisconsin winter.

Complicating matters further, a persistent insurance investigator named Joe Murcheson begins to suspect that Mickey is involved in criminal activities. Joe relentlessly pursues Mickey, gradually unraveling the truth behind the stolen violin and the events leading up to its theft.

As the tension mounts, Mickey finds himself caught in a dangerous game of cat and mouse, torn between loyalty to Randy and his own survival. To protect himself and his future, he must outmaneuver both Randy, who becomes increasingly unhinged, and Joe, who inches closer to exposing the truth.

Throughout the film, Thin Ice explores themes of deception, greed, and the consequences of one's actions. Mickey's desperate desire for financial gain sets off a chain of events that intensify with every twist and turn, ultimately leading to a climactic and dramatic conclusion against the backdrop of the harsh Wisconsin winter.
