Chad Gates, a young army veteran, returns to his beloved Hawaiian island after serving in the Army. He is excited to reunite with his surfboard, beach buddies, and his girlfriend, Maile Duval. However, his single-minded focus on living a carefree life of surfing and lounging on the beach clashes with his parents' expectations of him working in their pineapple business.
Chad's mother, Sarah Lee, hopes to groom him as the successor to their successful pineapple plantation. She tries to convince Chad to take up the responsibilities of the family business, hoping he will settle down and become a responsible adult. In contrast, Chad's freewheeling spirit yearns for more adventurous and carefree pursuits.
As Chad tries to find his place in the world, he takes up a job as a tour guide to please his parents. During one of his tours, he meets an attractive American tourist named Abigail Prentice. They develop a budding romance, which puts a strain on Chad's relationship with Maile. Confused about his feelings, Chad begins to question his commitment to Maile and wonders if he should explore a relationship with Abigail.
While Chad navigates his complicated romantic life, he also discovers a secret about his father, Fred Gates. Fred has been secretly struggling with financial problems and mounting debt, which threatens the future of the family business. Determined to save his family's legacy, Chad devises a plan to organize a charity concert to raise funds for the plantation.
Meanwhile, tensions continue to rise between Maile and Abigail as they compete for Chad's affections, adding further complications to his already complicated love life. Throughout the movie, catchy tunes by Elvis Presley, who plays Chad, accompany the narrative, adding a musical and romantic touch.
In a climactic finale, the charity concert is a resounding success, bringing the community together and saving the pineapple plantation. Chad must make a decision about his future – whether to accept his responsibilities as a businessman and follow his parents' wishes, or to pursue a life that aligns with his own passions and desires.
Ultimately, Chad chooses to follow his heart and live his life on his own terms. He reunites with Maile, realizing that she has always been the one who truly understands him. As the film concludes, Chad finds a balance between his love for surfing, his gratitude for his family, and his commitment to the woman who truly loves him, embracing all the beauty and happiness that Blue Hawaii offers.
