In "What Did You Do in the War, Daddy?", set during World War II, the by-the-book Captain (let's call him Captain Smith) is given the mission to capture a strategically important village in Italy. However, he faces a peculiar situation when he finds out that the Italian soldiers in the village are actually willing to surrender, but only if they are allowed to have a festival before doing so. Despite his initial hesitation, Captain Smith's lieutenant (Lieutenant Johnson) convinces him that this unorthodox approach is the only way to successfully secure the surrender without any bloodshed.

Realizing that the aerial reconnaissance would eventually reveal that the festival is happening instead of an actual battle, the military command sends in an intelligence officer named Major Roberts to supervise the situation and ensure that the appearance of conflict is maintained. Major Roberts' primary task is to observe and report back to their superiors, effectively becoming an undercover presence in the village.

As preparations for the festival begin, Captain Smith and his soldiers strive to maintain the illusion of being engaged in combat, staging fake skirmishes and planning their moves strategically. They go to great lengths trying to fool the aerial surveillance, creating a dynamic and comedic fight-filled atmosphere that contrasts with the peaceful intent of the festival.

Meanwhile, amidst the chaotic circumstances, the festival becomes complicated when it is revealed that the Mayor's daughter, Giovanna, is secretly in love with one of Captain Smith's soldiers, Private Johnson (not to be confused with Lieutenant Johnson). The young couple's relationship adds romantic tension to the plot as they navigate their hidden affection within the midst of the festival preparations and deployment of illusory military action.

As the festival day arrives, Captain Smith's soldiers continue to put on an elaborate show of faux combat, secretly coordinating their actions with the Italian soldiers who are ready to surrender. Amidst the chaos, Captain Smith forms a bond with the Italian Colonel who is responsible for the village's defense, realizing that the seemingly opposing sides are not so different after all.

As the festival progresses and the tension between the soldiers and their enemies melts away, the film explores themes of unity, friendship, and the foolishness of war. Eventually, the festival reaches its climax, and amidst the revelry, the Italian soldiers formally surrender, bringing an unexpectedly peaceful conclusion to the situation.

"What Did You Do in the War, Daddy?" is a light-hearted war comedy that focuses on the absurdity of military bureaucracy and the power of human connections to transcend differences, ultimately emphasizing the futility of war and the possibility of finding understanding even in the most unlikely circumstances.
