"The Great Escape" is a 1963 war film, based on the true story of an ambitious escape attempt by Allied prisoners of war during World War II. Set in 1943, the film takes place in Stalag Luft III, a maximum-security prison camp for captured Allied airmen deep in Nazi-occupied Germany.

While some evade capture, most are ultimately recaptured, and fifty of them are executed on Hitler's direct order. Only three escapees manage to make it to freedom.
