In The Map Against the World, Kim Jeong-Ho, a cartographer, lives during the Joseon Dynasty in the 19th century. As a young boy, he witnesses the tragic death of his father, who is a cartographer himself. His father dies due to the use of an erroneous map, which leads to a fatal accident during a surveying expedition.

Haunted by guilt and driven by a strong desire to rectify his father's death, Kim Jeong-Ho becomes determined to create an accurate and comprehensive map of Joseon. However, cartography during that time is controlled strictly by the government, and any unauthorized maps are considered forbidden and illegal.

Undeterred by the obstacles he faces, Kim Jeong-Ho embarks on a perilous journey to create his own map, venturing into uncharted territories, mountains, and remote regions. During his travels, he faces numerous challenges, including dangerous encounters with bandits and harsh weather conditions. Along the way, Kim Jeong-Ho encounters various people who become crucial allies in his quest, including his friend, a local guide, and a fellow cartographer.

As he progresses in mapping Joseon, Kim Jeong-Ho faces opposition and resistance from the corrupt officials and scholars who try to prevent the completion of his map. They fear that an accurate representation of the country will expose their hidden agendas and corrupt practices.

However, despite the obstacles and the constant threat to his life, Kim Jeong-Ho persists, motivated by the memory of his father's death and the belief that an accurate map can bring immense benefits to the people of Joseon. As his map nears completion, Kim Jeong-Ho must confront the powerful forces that seek to stop him and protect their own interests.

The Map Against the World is a captivating tale of perseverance, passion, and the strength of an individual's determination to challenge the status quo. It explores themes of historical accuracy, the pursuit of knowledge, and the importance of truth in a world where those in power often control information for their own gain.
