After arriving in 1955, Marty seeks out the help of the younger version of Doc Brown to figure out how to get back to his own time. He also discovers that the 1955 version of his father, George McFly, is a shy and awkward teenager who is constantly bullied by Biff Tannen, the school's bully. Marty realizes that he needs to intervene in his parents' interaction in order to ensure that they fall in love and eventually get married, otherwise he risks erasing his own existence from history.

Marty also has to navigate the challenges of being a teenager in the 1950s while trying to keep a low profile and avoid altering the future any further. Along the way, he encounters numerous obstacles and setbacks, including having his own mother, Lorraine, develop a crush on him instead of his father.

As the clock ticks down to the moment when Marty needs to return to 1985, he and Doc Brown race to find a way to generate the 1.21 gigawatts of electricity needed to power the DeLorean time machine. In the climactic final scenes, Marty successfully gets his parents to meet and fall in love, and with a well-timed lightning strike, he manages to harness enough power to travel back to the present day.

In the end, Marty returns to a 1985 that has been drastically improved by the changes he made in the past, and he reunites with his now-happier and more confident family. The movie ends with Doc Brown returning from the future, announcing that they need to travel to the year 2015 to resolve a problem involving Marty and Jennifer's future children.
