In the movie "Cactus Flower," Toni Simmons is a young woman who has been having an affair with Julian Winston, a middle-aged dentist. When Julian breaks a date with Toni, she becomes distraught and attempts suicide. This drastic action shocks Julian and makes him rethink his decision to marry Toni.
Julian, however, is concerned about Toni's insistence on honesty and the fact that he had previously told her he was married with three children. In reality, Julian had fabricated this story to avoid commitment. Now faced with Toni's desperation, Julian starts considering his options.
At the dental clinic where Julian works, there is a loyal and devoted nurse named Stephanie. For years, Stephanie has secretly loved Julian and she sees an opportunity to finally have him when she learns about his predicament. Stephanie offers to pretend to be Julian's wife and demand a divorce, thereby allowing him to avoid the commitment to Toni.
Julian accepts Stephanie's offer and they start elaborately staging a divorce scenario. They go as far as having Stephanie move into Julian's apartment and convincing his best friend, Igor, who is also Toni's neighbor, to support their story. All the while, Toni becomes increasingly suspicious of Julian's behavior and decides to investigate his supposed wife.
Throughout the movie, comedic situations arise as the complicated web of lies becomes more challenging to maintain. Toni's investigation leads her to Stephanie, who, in an unexpected twist, ends up falling for her as well. Confusion and hilarity ensue as the characters navigate their tangled relationships and struggle to maintain their respective facades.
