"The Wind That Shakes the Barley" is a 2006 historical drama film directed by Ken Loach. Set in 1920s Ireland, the movie follows the story of Damien O'Donovan, a young doctor who is about to leave his hometown to work at a hospital in London. As he bids farewell to his friends at a farm, a group of British Black and Tans, a paramilitary force, arrives and brutally kills a young man in front of Damien.

Shocked and angered by the violence, Damien decides to stay in Ireland and join the fight for independence from British rule. He joins the Irish Republican Army (IRA) led by his brother Teddy, who is a more experienced and dedicated member of the resistance movement.

The film highlights the escalating conflict between the IRA and the British forces. The Black and Tans are depicted as ruthless enforcers sent to suppress the Irish independence movement, using brutal tactics such as burnings, beatings, and mass arrests. As the violence intensifies, Damien becomes more deeply involved in the IRA's activities, performing acts of sabotage and participating in firefights against the British forces.

However, the political landscape shifts with the signing of the Anglo-Irish Treaty in 1921, which creates an independent Irish Free State but falls short of full independence. This leads to a deep division among the IRA members, as some support the Treaty while others believe it compromises their goal of a fully sovereign Ireland.

The conflict reaches a breaking point when the Irish Civil War breaks out between pro-treaty forces (known as the Free Staters) and anti-treaty rebels. Damien finds himself at odds with his brother Teddy, who supports the Treaty and joins the Free Staters, while Damien refuses to accept anything less than complete independence.

The movie explores the personal toll of the war and how it affects relationships and friendships. Damien and Teddy's once-close bond is strained as they find themselves on opposing sides of the conflict. The Wind That Shakes the Barley depicts the sacrifices made by the Irish people and the devastating consequences of a fractured nation fighting for its independence.
