Drama   United Kingdom,Ireland

Albert Nobbs, played by Glenn Close, is a reserved and introverted woman who has been disguising herself as a man for over 30 years to work as a butler in Morrison's Hotel in Dublin. In this late 19th-century society, women are expected to be dependent on men and often face limited options for employment.

Albert leads a solitary life and diligently saves money with the hope of opening a small shop one day. However, everything changes when a handsome painter named Hubert Page, portrayed by Janet McTeer, arrives at the hotel. Hubert is also a woman disguising herself as a man to work as a house painter.

Hubert discovers Albert's secret and becomes a confidant who understands the struggles and challenges they both face. Albert becomes infatuated with the idea of escaping her life and opening a business with Hubert's help. However, Albert's dreams are shattered when she learns that Hubert is married to a woman named Cathleen, played by Bronagh Gallagher.

Meanwhile, Albert develops a crush on a young maid named Helen Dawes, played by Mia Wasikowska. Helen reciprocates the feelings but is engaged to Joe, a charming but unreliable young man. Albert secretly saves money to propose to Helen and rescue her from her troubled relationship, hoping to provide her with a better life.

As Albert plans to reveal her true gender to Helen, the engagement between Helen and Joe falls apart due to his gambling addiction. Albert seizes the opportunity and asks Helen to marry him, envisioning a future together. However, their plans are halted when Helen abruptly dies from a botched abortion.

Devastated, Albert makes a decision to seize the remaining money saved and fulfill her dream of opening a small tobacco shop, where she hopes to find companionship and independence. She seeks a loan from a wealthy hotel guest named Mr. Dilk, portrayed by Jonathan Rhys Meyers, but is heartbreakingly rejected, leaving her dreams shattered once again.

In the end, Albert resigns herself to a life of lonliness, accepting that her true identity and desires may never be realized. The movie serves as a poignant exploration of gender identity, society's limitations, and the heartbreaking circumstances that can arise from living a life based on deception.
