"The Prestige" follows the story of two magicians, Robert Angier (played by Hugh Jackman) and Alfred Borden (played by Christian Bale), who begin as friends but soon become bitter rivals. The film is set in London during the late 19th century.

The story starts with both Angier and Borden working as assistants for renowned magician Milton (played by Ricky Jay). During one of their performances, Angier's wife Julia drowns while attempting a dangerous trick, leading Angier to blame Borden for her death. This tragic incident ignites their rivalry and sets them on a path of obsession and vengeance.

As they begin their individual careers as magicians, both Angier and Borden constantly compete against each other, striving to outperform and outwit one another. The friendly competition between them soon evolves into a deadly game of one-upmanship. They sabotage each other's tricks, steal each other's secrets, and go to great lengths to ruin each other's reputations.

Their rivalry becomes more intense when Angier discovers a mysterious trick called "The Transported Man" performed by Nikola Tesla (played by David Bowie). Determined to master this trick and surpass Borden, Angier travels to Colorado Springs to meet Tesla and persuades him to build a device for him. Meanwhile, Borden reveals his own secret to Angier, discovering the secret to cloning himself.

Angier, now armed with Tesla's invention, which is capable of creating an exact duplicate of himself, uses it to perform "The Transported Man." Each time he performs, he drowns one of his clones, leaving the audience amazed and horrified. The trick becomes a hit, attracting large crowds, but also adding to the illusion that Angier is a ruthless and dangerous magician.

Driven by jealousy and the desire to defeat Angier, Borden tries to understand Angier's trick, leading him to hire the beautiful Olivia Wenscombe (played by Scarlett Johansson) as his spy and lover to infiltrate Angier's performances. However, their intense rivalry takes a dark turn when Borden's secrets are exposed, leading to him being arrested and put on trial for the murder of Angier's assistant, who was actually one of Borden's clones.

As the story unfolds, it is revealed that Borden and Angier both paid a heavy price for their rivalry. The constant obsession has taken a toll on their personal lives, causing them to lose loved ones and become consumed by their obsession with magic. The film's climax exposes a final twist, revealing the lengths each magician went to in order to obtain their ultimate tricks and achieve true mastery.

"The Prestige" explores themes of sacrifice, revenge, obsession, and the blurred line between reality and illusion. It is a gripping tale of two magicians driven to the brink of madness in their quest for supremacy, ultimately leading to tragic and deadly consequences.
