Bill S. Preston, Esquire and Ted "Theodore" Logan are not only failing high school students but also aspiring musicians. Their band, "Wyld Stallyns," is their greatest passion. However, unless they pass their upcoming history presentation, they will be separated, and Ted will be sent to military school by his strict father, jeopardizing their dream of becoming rock legends.

Just when all hope seems lost, a time traveler named Rufus arrives in a phone booth that can traverse through time. Rufus explains that in the future, Bill and Ted are revered for their music, which inspires an era of peace and harmony. In order to save their future and graduate, Rufus offers to take them on an excellent adventure through time to collect historical figures for their history report.

With no choice but to accept, Bill and Ted embark on their time-traveling journey. Their first stop is ancient Greece, where they abduct the philosopher Socrates, or as they nickname him, "So-crates." They also bring back the legendary warrior Genghis Khan, the inventor Leonardo da Vinci, the scientist Sir Isaac Newton, the strategist Napoleon Bonaparte, and many other renowned figures from different time periods.

Along the way, they encounter numerous comedic situations and challenges. They accidentally bring back two medieval princesses, Joanna and Elizabeth, who quickly fall in love with Bill and Ted. While trying to manage the princesses, historical figures, and the time-traveling phone booth, chaos ensues.

As their adventure nears its end, Bill and Ted realize that they need to come up with a way to ensure their success in the history presentation. They decide to gather all the historical figures they collected throughout time and present them as a living history exhibit to their class. However, in order to make the presentation truly memorable, they plan to perform an epic concert featuring the assembled historical figures.

The day of the history presentation arrives, and Bill and Ted transport their newfound friends and the princesses into the auditorium using their time-traveling booth. As chaos erupts once again, Bill and Ted address their classmates, explaining the importance of historical figures and how they shape the present and future. With an extraordinary rock concert, they show their classmates the power of music and its ability to bridge gaps between different eras.

To their surprise and relief, their presentation is a great success. The entire school applauds their unique approach and newfound knowledge of history. Bill and Ted's friendship, determination, and passion to make music triumphs, enabling them to pass their history class and keep the band together. The movie ends with Bill, Ted, and their assembled historical entourage embarking on a new, even more excellent adventure, ready to pursue their dreams with newfound inspiration and knowledge.
